A film can run two minutes or three hours and still belong to the same art. The short form compresses a single idea to its sharpest point, while the feature has room to follow a character across a long arc of change. Neither is a lesser version of the other; they simply ask different things of whoever is watching.

Genre gives an audience a rough map before the lights go down. A western, a horror picture, a musical — each carries a set of expectations that a good film either honors or bends on purpose. The most durable work often lives in the gap between what a genre promises and what the filmmaker actually delivers.

Documentary sits alongside narrative fiction as an equal branch of the form. Rather than inventing a story, it shapes footage of real people and events into something with the same tension and release as a scripted film. The line between the two is thinner than it looks — every documentary makes choices about what to show, and many fiction films are built from close observation of actual life.
