Description: The small Czech town of Třeboň found itself at the center of unexpected international attention when the world-wide press picked up on an obscure urban legend from World War Two, some 70 years after the event. The story in question involves nurses, Nazis, seduction, and syphilis, but no-one can agree on what really happened.
Black&White pieces this legend together through a collage of interviews with a group of locals. The film explores how the story came about in the first place, and how it evolved after it ended up in the news. Their reflections are visualized through a combination of excerpts from the history of cinema, together with animation, problematizing the types of tropes and conventions used to depict the roles of women.
As a team, we all have a shared interest in stories about women. In particular, we aim to shine a light on overlooked experiences, while calling out ridiculous clichés and mistruths. With this in mind, when we first stumbled across the legend of the nurse from Třeboň in a news article, it stood out as shocking, attention, grabbing and highly memorable. Most importantly, it also struck us as the perfect framework for playing with these notions of womanhood.
Centered around one anonymous woman who simultaneously embodies the archetypes of caregiver, avenger, victim, and seductress, it reveals just how absurd our preconceptions are when it comes to women in wartime and how they acted. In addition, the more we looked into the background of the story, the more apparent it became that it had been entirely constructed, which made the fact that it traveled around the world even more remarkable.
