Description: Abbey Leaks is based on a true story that happened in the town of Abbeyloix in Ireland in 2001. Its result was the death of Irish Garda Sergeant John Effie who was shot in the back by another Irish Garda. Rumors (and never confirmed) Sergeant Effie was about to testify on the whole Garda National Response Unit for “crimes committed by them outside the rule of law.
That day was a day of serious cock-ups that cost the life of a very young Garda. For instance, the local Garda couldn’t tell that the Garda National Response Unit was undercover and as they saw them with guns mistaken took them for the second bunch of robbers. Due to this sad day in Ireland in 2001, the Garda have now a code, uncover Garda moving into a local area armed undercover where a serious crime is about to be committed now wear a special armband to identify them to the local Garda.
The case also caused huge concerns when the judge convicting the robbers asked the media to leave the court under huge protest from the media. All robbers were released on an appeal to the Irish court of appeal after serving ten years in prison. There was a huge cock up that day, as the officers were undercover in a bar. After thirty-six hours two sources have confirmed they give up the coffee for alcohol. This contributes to the way that very sad day in Irish history happened. The family of the late Sergeant John Effie and the media have since campaigned for full disclosure as someone “very high up” shut down their Garda investigation. To this day, that individual has never been identified.
