Director Statement:

“Showtime takes viewers into the world of a New York City train dancer”. During the summer of 2017 I was asked to pitch an original film to MACRO, known for Academy Award-nominated films "Fences" and "Mudbound". I spent weeks prior trying to figure out what to pitch. I chose a film that meant so much to not only myself but to the New York City culture. As a Harlem, NY native and daily train commuter, I watched kids strut onto the train and shout "Showtime"!

They would pull off some of the most amazing dances and commuters would fill their hats with money. Many of my friends began dancing at a young age in dance groups to escape the violence in New York City. When the violence began to rise in the city many of the dance groups turned into gangs and a number of those kids died or went to jail. Those who continued to dance went underground into New York City Metro Subway Trains. The trains served not only as an escape from the crime in the city but also as an opportunity for so many young dancers to showcase their talents to thousands of commuters on a daily basis.
