Description: May travels out to the San Francisco Bay Area to help out with her daughter’s busy family, but her daytime solitude is disrupted when she makes a new acquaintance.
Developed from documentary videos of the filmmaker's mother, "Alexa and May" follows the activities of a widowed Vietnamese American grandmother who goes to the San Francisco Bay Area to help out with her daughter's busy family. May is left to her own devices during the day and tries to befriend the resident digital voice assistant.
This first film grew from lots of time spent with my mother in the recent years. It first started as videos I shot of her talking to Alexa to remember the funny interactions she would have with this friend of hers, a device she loved to play music with in the mornings. It expanded to showing the ways she helped our family and interacted with us during her visits. As a little window into her life, it shows the isolation and alienation our parents’ generation can feel when living with their kids and grandchildren in a country they didn’t grow up in, and their struggle to gain their own sense of independence in their later years of life. Though very specific to the Asian American experience, I think it should be relatable to many families of all cultures.
