Description: [Screening @ Tiburon Film Society]
One among thousands is a documentary about a Cuban musician who returns to the island in search of lost relatives, forgotten songs and, perhaps, a piece of his soul. Victor Alvarez left Havana when he was just 13. Now, more than four decades later, he returns as an outsider and explores revolutionary Cuba.
His personal journey is the broader story of the Cuban nation, a country divided by war, revolution and Cold War politics. He is among hundreds of thousands of Cubans who have left the island since 1959.
His personal journey is the broader story of the Cuban nation, a country divided by war, revolution and Cold War politics. He is among hundreds of thousands of Cubans have left the island since 1959. But for Victor and many others, Cuba has never been far behind. “Cuba is a C in my forehead that I can’t erase,” said Victor, now 56. “I live and breathe Cuba, and I can’t get it out of my soul. That land calls me.”
During his trip home, Victor will visit the Old Havana clubs where he once listened - and tried to mimic - some of the great masters of Cuban folk music. He’ll go to the Malecón, or seawall, where he used to gaze across the Florida Straits and play his guitar, nicknamed la Bellesita - Little Beautiful One. He’ll go to the home where his mother taught him to play the mandolin and the laúd, a 12-string Cuban guitar.
