Description: SOLO follows Clay, a young Appalachian teenager who quietly slips out of his small town one morning. As Clay and his younger brother, Lewis, spend the day journeying along the backroads of their hometown, the larger mystery of where they're going - and why they're going there - becomes heartbreakingly clear.
"Two summers ago, I saw a documentary called Rich Hill. It followed the lives of three young boys growing up in an impoverished, rural Midwestern town. As sobering as the film was, it also offered incredible insight into the hopes and dreams of these resilient young men. I left the theatre moved and wanting more. In my mind, these kids were as compelling as any fictional characters Iíd experienced in cinema that year. As a film student at New York University, I quickly realized that there were many towns similar to Rich Hill right in my backyard. Only a three hour drive outside of the city, I found myself in conditions that echoed those in the film. This area, I learned, was the uppermost tip of Rural Appalachia, a region that has suffered from extreme poverty for decades. After nine months of research and endless location scouts, Solo is my attempt to bring this underserved region to life in a narrative short film. Iíve strived to create characters that feel honest, and that brim with the dignity and heart I have witnessed in their real-life counterparts.
Solo is ultimately a small film that packs a big emotional punch. Similar to recent successes like Short Term 12, Fish Tank, and Winterís Bone, itís a universal story about youth grappling with their own sense of self-worth, grounded in a real and underrepresented area of the United States." - Matthew Puccini
