Description: A young woman caring for her elderly grandmother and depressed father, attempts to find her own way
Rory works at a local motel and lives on the outskirts of a small north-western seaside town caring for both her despondent father and her ailing grandmother. Most of her contact with the world comes from the home nurse’s weekly visit, a motel manager and Sandy and her teenage son Eric who live next door with an abusive man.
Upon the death of her grandmother, Rory locates her estranged mother who left the family years earlier, hoping to convince her to come home. Eventually, Rory realizes that her mother is ultimately too damaged to return. With this knowledge, she attempts to help her father let go of the past and move on.
This film is about lost souls and unfulfilled dreams. Yet even though there are those who are unlucky enough to be born into damaged families, a select few, through strength and determination, can find their way to a more hopeful place. Like the northern lights born from sun protons hitting the earth with only a few breaking free through gaps in the atmosphere, when a spirit can transcend its dysfunctional beginnings, it can not only survive but shine.
