Eye Contact - The Photography of Charles Wong
Running Time: 26 minutes
Cast: Charles Wong
Showtime: Monday, April 23, 2012 @ 07:10 PM
Director: Mindy Steiner
Description: Charles Wong, now 90 years old, studied photography at the California School of Fine Arts under Ansel Adams in 1949; as a student he photographed San Francisco during the late 40's and early 50's focusing primarily on Chinatown, the place of his birth. Wong created photographs in a series that had 'a beginning, climax and an end' and are accompanied by written text, flowing in loosely connected lines that have the rhythm and emotional tone of verse.
Image and word present a single theme that transcends the people or objects themselves, extending to thoughts about life, death, and dignity. Wong's photographs speak of his cultural heritage, respecting Chinese practices and traditions while exploring the differences between old and new generations, and the complexity of being both American and Chinese.
Screening as part of: Marin Filmmakers
Attending: Charles Wong & Mindy Steiner [director]
