After graduating from Edinburgh College of Art, where he was awarded the Heriot Watt Medal for drawing and painting, Rupert moved to London and founded Ear Drum Music, writing music for various independent and touring theatre companies. After a spell working as a storyboard artist, he started writing and directing short films, the first of which was TRIPHONY (1993). Since then, he has made several more: FIRST BIT (IN PUB) (1996) commissioned by the South Bank for Poetry International; SEEING THINGS (1997) for the BFI; TALES FROM THE FOYER (1999) for Alderburgh Poetry Festival; and THE SICKIE (2006) starring Toby Jones.

In collaboration with Hamish McColl and Emily Woof, he made VAN MORRISON (2000); JOHN CONSTABLE (2001); and THE LONG RUN (2005) each written and shot over a weekend. Rupert has directed many pop promos (for bands as various as The Streets, Charlotte Church, Starsailor, Gomez, Sophie Ellis Bextor) and dabbled in commercials.
For children’s television he has written THE SPARKLING HUMDIDDLER (2000) and THE STRIKE (2001) - an episode of the BAFTA nominated children’s series SIR GADABOUT, episodes of which he also directed. He has also co-written 12 hours of storylines for an Anglo Indian soap-opera CITY OF DREAMS (1995). Most recently, he has directed THE LIFE AND TIMES OF VIVIENNE VYLE, a pilot for BBC1 written and starring Jennifer Saunders.

With Neil Hunter, Rupert has written a number of features: COSSACKS in development at The Bureau; THE WRONG JOHN with Clerkenwell Films; and a black comedy, FURRANISTORDOORTEN. He is also developing, SLIPPY GREEN and THE PARROT.
