Natasha Blass & Alex Mallonee
Natasha Blass is a writer, actress, and commercial producer born and raised in the Bay Area. She has produced and starred in numerous commercials for tech giants such as Facebook, Google, and Apple. Her experience in tech is what inspired the initial concept for the film. She uses apps to order food and escape awkward situations.
Alex Mallonee is a freelance director, producer, and occasional hand model. Originally from Lafayette CA, he now lives in Brooklyn where he runs his own commercial film production company creating content for a variety of clients, many of them tech companies. He still doesn't get what the big deal about Snapchat is.
"Man's Best Friend" is their first narrative project together.
San Francisco used to be famous for its hippies and artists but recently it has become more notorious for tech culture. It is home to hundreds of popular apps like Lyft and Instacart, making it the epicenter of what many call the “sharing economy.” Though these apps, we can have our food delivered and our dogs walked at the touch of a button. While this may make life easier for some, it can also make life very difficult for the people performing these activities. The employees behind these apps are often treated less like humans and more like machines, expected to perform their tasks flawlessly and quickly for what often amounts to less than minimum wage. Man’s Best Friend explores this dynamic between customer and contractor.
It reminds us that, though we may be connected by computers and algorithms, we are all still only human and therefore subject to make mistakes. Our other goal in making this film is to show that art is still very much alive in the Bay Area, though many artists have been forced to take side gigs as Uber drivers. With that in mind, we’ve assembled a cast and crew of professionals from the Bay Area. Even our music is licensed exclusively from Bay Area artists and our composer is based out of Oakland.
