Zdenek Zelenka was born on December 15, 1954 in Prague, Czechoslovakia.
Having completed the Electrotechnical Secondary School he joined (in 1974) the Barrandov Film Studio as an Assistant Director where he collaborated on the production of feature films by leading directors (Věra Plívová-Šimková, Ota Koval, Karel Smyczek, Jiří Svoboda, Jaroslav Papoušek...). Between 1976–1981 he studied at FAMU (Film and Photography Academy in Prague) film and television direction. Even while he was a student he still co-operated with the Barrandov Film Studio whose employee he remained until 1990. From that time he is "a freelance".
He directed his film debut in 1985, the co-production film "Magical Legacy", From 1990 he collaborates with Czech Television for which he has filmed more than thirty projects. For example, the fairy-tales "The Immortal Aunt", "Rumplcimprcampr", "Sleeping Beauty", "The Gracious Ghost" , "The Magic of Kings", TV films: "Kean", "Arrowsmith", "Azrael, Angel of Death", "Piano Lessons", "A Canadian Night", Documentary: "Secret of Jiřina Bohdalová". He often works with the Czech acting legend, Jiřina Bohdalová. This applies also to his last film "Every Million Comes Handy" for which he wrote the script and directed in honour of this popular actress' 85th birthday. Significant is also his direction of musicals which he has focused on since 2014.
He is a known for Carovne dedictvi (1986), Freonovy duch (1991) and Kouzla kralu (2008).
Every Million Comes Handy (2016) is his latest film.
